La naturaleza en el objetivo

Fotógrafo aficionado, lo cierto es que Alberto Gómez posee un trabajo de una calidad indiscutible. Habiéndose criado en “un paraíso como Jimena de la Frontera”, como él mismo dice, no es de extrañar que su amor por la naturaleza le hiciera decantarse por ésta como objetivo principal de su cámara. Hace ya ocho años que su mujer le regaló la primera cámara, una Nikon F50, y tras realizar un cursillo de iniciación a la fotografía se lanzó definitivamente a practicar su hobby favorito. Las sabias lecciones del algecireño Fernando Barrios y su interés por mejorar, pronto empezaron a reflejarse en sus instantáneas: “comparaba mis fotografías con las de las revistas, las analizaba e intentaba buscar el motivo por el que las mías no eran tan buenas. Eso es algo que sigo haciendo. Composición, encuadre, fondos, luces, intento ver todo lo bueno que tiene cada fotografía, para poder seguir aprendiendo”. Por supuesto, “también soy el más crítico con mis fotos, porque casi todas tienen defectos que se pueden corregir en las siguientes”.

Alberto reconoce que el paso al formato digital ha facilitado muchos aspectos de la fotografía, ya que se puede ver el resultado al instante y se conocen los datos del disparo en el mismo momento. “Recuerdo ir con una libreta para ir apuntando todos los datos de cada foto para cuando llevara las diapositivas a revelar,poder analizar dónde y porqué me había equivocado”.

Al contrario que otros fotógrafos de naturaleza, Alberto no se ha especializado en un tema concreto, sino que abarca toda la amplitud del mundo natural, “intento hacer de todo un poco, ya que cada una tiene su encanto”. Pero, sobre todo, lo fundamental para él es el respeto, “debemos anteponer el bienestar del ser vivo que estamos fotografiando a poder hacer una foto de cualquier especie”.

Nature through the lens

As a self-taught photographer, the quality of work by Alberto Gómez is indisputable. Having been brought up in ‘a paradise like Jimena de la Frontera’, as he says, it is not too surprising that his love for Nature should have emerged through the lens of his camera. It is eight years ago that his wife gave him his first camera, a Nikon F50, and, after a short course on basic photography, he set out to practice his favourite hobby. The wise lessons from photographer Fernando Barrios, of Algeciras, and Alberto’s own commitment to improvement were soon reflected in his pictures. “I compared my photos with those from magazines, studied them and tried to find out why mine weren’t as good. I still do that. Composition, framing, backgrounds, lighting – I try to see what is best in each picture so that I can carry on learning,” says Gómez, adding, “Of course, I am also very critical of my own work because they all have defects that can be corrected next time.”Alberto recognizes that the arrival of digital photography has made things a lot easier as he can see the result instantly and know all the details there and then. “I remember going around with a notebook, writing down the details of each frame so that when they came to be developed I could see where and when I had gone wrong,” he says.

Unlike other nature photographers, Gómez has not specialized in any particular subject but covers the vast possibilities offered by nature, “I try to do a bit of everything, as each subject has its own attraction,” he explains. Above all, though, is his respect for the subject: “We should put ahead the interests of the live creature we’re taking pictures of rather than the interests of the photographer,” he adds.
